The most famous incident in the history of Yugoslavia’s fight against the Nazis during World War II is the Igman March. In January 1942, in the hills north of Sarajevo, the Germans had encircled the 1st Proletarian Brigade and were about to close in and kill all of them. The only route to safety for the partisans was to cross Mount Igman. This was clearly impossible. It was the dead of winter, the snow was deep, a wide and only partially frozen river was in the way, and the temperatures on the mountain were minus 25 degrees Celsius. But the partisans crossed the mountain anyway. Many froze to death. My father was one of the few people who survived and crossed this mountain.

When I called my father and told him that I was going to walk the Great Wall, he said, “Why are you doing this?”

“Well, you survived the Igman March,” I said. “I can walk the Great Wall.”

“How long will this Chinese Wall walk take?” he asked.

“Three months,” I said. “Ten hours a day of walking.”

He said, “Do you know how long the Igman March was?”

I had no idea. To me, it had always seemed like an eternity.

“One night,” he told me.
